Biomass fuel options

Before committing to the purchase of a biomass boiler, make sure that you assess your fuel supply options carefully. Remember it’s cheaper to buy in bulk than small quantities.

Key issues for wood fuels include:

  • How much will you pay per tonne? Prices for seasoned logs in bulk range from £60 to £120 per tonne. Pellets range from £120 to £180 per tonne.
  • Make sure any delivery charges are included in the fuel price. Some suppliers can charge £100 per tonne for delivery depending on your location
  • Is the supply local? Wood fuel transported long distances is not as sustainable as locally sourced fuel.
  • For all wood fuels (especially logs) make sure that they are seasoned. The water content of any wood fuel should not exceed 20%, and should preferably be less. Ask you supplier for details.
  • Make sure you have the space to store your fuel. Remember, on average, 640 kg of wood fuel will occupy a space of 1m x1m x 1m.
  • Finally, if you are used to the convenience of gas, do bear in mind re-fuelling and maintenance aspects of biomass
