Biomass & planning: the facts

Biomass installations don't usually affect the external appearance of your property. Therefore planning issues for small-scale biomass systems or log burners aren't as big an issue as for other technologies such as wind power. However, be aware that other factors need to be considered for biomass:

  • Your installer should be accredited by HETAS for the installation of solid fuel appliances and hot water systems. HETAS is the official body recognised by government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services.
  • If you live in a smoke control area, make sure that your system and fuel complies with the requirements. This is especially important if you are planning to install a log stove – only specific models comply with the smoke control requirements.
  • If you live in a listed building or AONB, then restrictions may apply to external flue location and appearance.
    • If in doubt about the compliance of your biomass system, ask your installer for further information. It also makes sense to contact your local authority for specific guidance.

      Biomass planning tips:

      • Check out your local authority website for local information about planning issues. Search the site for 'renewable energy' if you can’t find the right page
      • Ask your installer for advice – especially if they are local!
      • Always consult your local authority for precise guidance if you live in a conservation area or a listed building.
