Renewable Energy – Heat and Power that doesn’t Cost the Earth

Renewable energy options

Solar, wind and biomass are all forms
of renewable energy

Renewable energy comes from sources that are continuously replenished and that won’t run out. For domestic purposes, these can include sources like the Sun, or wind or rivers and streams. Wood fuel (or biomass) is also classed as renewable energy.

Renewable energy is converted into either heat or electricity. The right system for you depends on your energy needs - and on your available renewable energy resources where you live.

Key factors when considering renewable energy:

  • Are you looking for a very low maintenance option? If so, then solar, wind or heat pump technologies may suit you best.
  • Are you able and willing to buy and store woodfuel, and to refuel your wood boiler? If so, then you may want to consider biomass.
  • In general, wind turbines struggle in urban areas due to wind turbulence and obstructions.
  • What's your budget? Renewable energy systems vary widely in price – from less than £2,500 for a log stove with boiler to around £8000-£10,000 for a photovoltaic (PV) system or ground source heat pump

If a renewable energy installation for your property is not suitable or is too expensive, then why not consider signing up to a green electricity tariff?
