The suitability of renewable energy technology for your property depends on some key factors:
- The amount of wind and Sun at your location – more of both is desirable. This depends on where you live in the UK as well as the siting of your property and surrounding obstacles
- For biomass, the availability of a local supply of high quality cost-effective wood fuel is important, along with access and a suitable covered space to store it.
- For ground source heat pumps, sufficient external ground area and equipment access to install the required heat exchangers is needed.
- What are you paying for your current energy supplies, such as gas, oil, LPG or solid fuel? The more you pay the more money your renewable energy system will save.
- What's your budget? Renewable energy systems vary widely in price – from less than &poound;2,500 for a log stove with boiler up to as much as £12,000 for a typical photovoltaic (PV) system or ground source heat pump installation. Larger systems for bigger properties will cost more.
